Gaming to Prevent Suicide
The Hunter Burton Memorial Community Impact Award honors an individual or individuals who have used the power of games to foster community building, kindness, inclusion, and positive reinforcement. This unique award recognizes a person whose passion for games has become a transformative force, bringing people together, promoting empathy, and creating spaces where individuals can connect, learn, and grow in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Community Building Through Games: The recipient of this award demonstrates an exceptional ability to use games as tools to unite diverse groups of people. Whether through organizing game nights, tournaments, or social gatherings, they have created welcoming spaces where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can come together, build relationships, and develop a shared sense of belonging. By integrating fun and play, they cultivate stronger communities, breaking down social barriers and encouraging collaboration among individuals who may not otherwise cross paths.
Kindness in Every Move: At the heart of this individual’s work is a deep commitment to kindness. They understand that games are not just about competition, but about fostering a positive, encouraging atmosphere where everyone feels respected and valued. The recipient’s kindness is evident in how they create environments where participants are treated with empathy, where good sportsmanship is celebrated, and where every player, regardless of skill level, is made to feel welcome. Through their actions, they demonstrate that the true spirit of play lies in building others up, not tearing them down.
Inclusion Through Play: The awardee has a strong focus on ensuring that games are accessible to everyone. They actively seek out ways to include individuals who may feel excluded or overlooked—whether due to disability, socioeconomic barriers, or cultural differences. By introducing games that are adaptable, inviting diverse groups to participate, and encouraging inclusive play, they ensure that no one is left out. Whether by offering modified game rules, providing free or low-cost game opportunities, or creating accessible spaces, this person is dedicated to making sure that all players, regardless of their background or ability, can experience the joy and connection that comes from playing together.
The Community Impact Award is not just about an individual’s love for games, but about the profound, lasting impact they make through using games as a vehicle for connection, kindness, and inclusion. This award celebrates the power of play to create positive change, enrich lives, and build stronger, more compassionate communities where everyone can connect, thrive and feel safe.

As you are probably aware, Sunday March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day 2024… and since this is our 10th Anniversary, we wanted to do something special for our Sunday attendees!
On Sunday, all attendees can begin looking for their own Pot-O-Gold around the conference center! Ten of them to be exact (because, it’s our tenth anniversary obviously!) Each little cauldron will have a surprise amount of prize chips inside useable to spend on the prize wall at the event. Amounts range from 20 chips all the way up to 100!!!
Here are a few rules just so everyone knows the bounds of play and what they are looking for:
1.) All attendees are eligible to claim one or more of the “Pots of gold” hidden around the Hurst Conference Center and Hilton Hotel. Vendors, artists, volunteers, staff are not eligible to claim the items!
2.) The items will ONLY be located in public access areas, specifically in areas for the convention goers. We ask that you please do not stray into office or back loading areas during your search. Examples of where they may be are in the tournament hall, the main foyer, the side events room, or potentially even the patio!
(All prizes will be accessible so that no damage is caused to the facility. If you cause damage to the facility you will be asked to leave the venue and required to pay the cost of repair/replacement.)
3.) Please be respectful if someone finds the prize before you. Fighting and arguments will not be tolerated.
4.) The prizes will ONLY be available on Sunday, March 17th and only during the public event hours.
You can claim multiple prizes, so make sure you start looking as soon as the convention hall opens on Sunday morning! It’s well worth coming by just to participate! Happy hunting everyone!
Check out the full events schedule! See y’all March 15th-17th!
Registration is live!

A staple of the HBMO each year is the Opening Ceremony Cocktail Party held the Friday evening of the event. This year, we celebrate our 10th Anniversary in style with the best Opening Ceremony to date!
If you have never attended this event, you are in for a treat! Entry to this event includes dinner and live musical performance by Penny & the Flamethrowers! In addition, there is a cash bar available serving beverages all evening. There is also an exclusive silent auction just for this event!
“This event holds a special place for our foundation and the HBMO. Specifically, this is an amazing opportunity to invite our contributors, artists, and VIP attendees to meet with guests that may not be part of the gaming community and introduce them to our cause. It creates a bridge to our community and gives us a way to spread the message of kindness and inclusion.”
– Erin Giddings: Director of Charity Operations HBM –

A very special thank you to Penny & The Flamethrowers for performing this year!
Penny and the Flamethrowers is the only band in north Texas fronted by a published 50s/60s style pinup model … Penny Ruffles. She’s a little naughty and a whole lot of nice! She and her band, the Flamethrowers, are bringing a rockabilly blowtorch to festivals and venues all over the region. They are developing their own sound. It’s a rocket fueled bluesy swing American roots rockabilly sound with a nod to Cash and Cline. Penny and the Flamethrowers are a look back to when rock and roll was built on three chords and rebellion! It’s songs most everyone knows, with a swingin’ beat and a bit of a modern edge. If you listen closely, you might even hear an original tune sprinkled in from time to time.
Rock and Roll.
The band is:
Penny Ruffles (Amber Watkins) – Lead vocals, guitar and percussion; Coppell, Texas
The Flamethrowers are:
David “Bread Man” Baird – Drums; Flower Mound, Texas.
“Uncle” Jerry Farmer – bass; Flower Mound, Texas
Jack Ruffles (Daren Watkins) – guitars and vocals, Coppell, Texas
A huge thank you to the our sponsors and contributors making the Opening Ceremony possible!

This year is a truly special year for the HBMO. In the last decade we have outlasted ups and downs of the gaming industry, navigated the loss of dear friends and organizers like Jeff Zandi and Ian Jasheway, survived a global pandemic, and grown 886% since our year one event. All of those things have presented challenges we never thought we would face when we sat down and planned the first HBMO in 2013. Doing all of that as a nonprofit with zero paid employees makes even more proud because it means we have had the tremendous support of players, sponsors, and volunteers to pilot us to success!
All of those above things made it even more important that the playmat for 2024 be special. We wanted to put forward several elements to not only embody what we’ve done, but where we are going! As the HBMO grows and expands, we wanted the elements to be represented artistically.
First, this year’s mat was hand-drawn by Studio Aries owner Carl Braun. He has a deep connection to the gaming industry from his years as the Creative Director at Score Entertainment, developing trading card games such as the Original Dragon Ball Z, Inuyasha, Bleach, and several more! Carl also has a deep love for hand drawn art, especially comic art. He has gone on to work at companies like Panini America and Funimation, and now owns a studio publishing his own comic book series. Besides his accolades in the industry, Carl is also deeply connected to the cause behind the HBMO and has wanted to be involved for years! This presented a fantastic opportunity to get him involved!
The design of the mat symbolizes several things. The main element showcases a creature D&D players should be very familiar with! It was important to show a representation of different games this year as we will be adding multiple other TCGs and gaming events to our schedule in 2024 and years to come! The iconic D20 symbolizes so many things… It is the starting life total in Magic the Gathering. The dice itself showing a 20 is famous for the “Critical Hit” in Dungeons and Dragons. Last, but certainly not least, it’s our little nod to the next decade of the HBMO (we look forward to decade number two).
In addition to the focal elements on the art, there are other important factors not as easily noticed. The first being the night sky, representing that it’s always darkest just before the dawn. We also adapted a logo specifically for our 10th Anniversary event to commemorate a decade of building an all inclusive and welcoming community of gamers from all over the country! Finally, we added the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline icon so that no matter where you play, you can help spread awareness about suicide and make sure the resource is in the hands of the most players possible.
There are several ways to secure your mat in 2024:
1 – Sign up for the VIP package. This year only 25 are available and you will get an exclusive stitched edge version of the playmat.
2 – Prize Wall. Play in side events all weekend long to earn prize chips and cash them in on the prize wall for the regular version of the mat. (limited quantities available)
3 – Silent Auction. There will be one stitched mat in the silent auction on Friday evening at the Opening Ceremony, and one stitched mat on the silent auction running through the weekend in the main hall.
4 – Volunteer. All of our volunteers will receive a regular version of the mat.
Looking for a different way to get the art? How about a T-shirt? This art will be featured on our 2024 event shirt available in limited quantities for purchase or on the prize wall!
By the way, did we mention that Carl Braun will have a booth and can sign your playmat?! Also, for you original art collectors, the original hand-drawn and inked art will be floating around and obtainable at the event!
