HBMO In-store Trials

Starting in 2023, the Hunter Burton Memorial Open will offer the opportunity for players to earn byes in the main event.

Any Magic store can apply to hold a HBMO in-store Trial, by filling out the application form.

For 2023, trials must be held between January 1st, 2023 and March 12th, 2023.

There is no cost to hold a trial. If you would like to donate to HBM you’re free to do so.

Trial Event Rules

While HBMO isn’t associated with the RCQ system, for simplicity, we note that if you run your Trial in the same fashion with the same rules as an RCQ, it will meet the requirements of a HBM Trial.

It is permitted to run an RCQ and a HBM trial as the same event, your store is simply adding additional prizes to your RCQ. In this case all RCQ rules always supersede any HBM trial rules

The following rules apply:

  1. Trials must be run at competitive rules enforcement level and follow all MTR rules.
  2. Trials must have at least eight players.
  3. Trials may be run as Standard, Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, Sealed or Booster Draft.
  4. The bye will only be awarded to the winner of the event. It is not permitted for players to agree for the bye to be awarded to 2nd place.
  5. The result of a trial must be reported to HBM before March 13th, 2023 or it will not be honored.

Trial Application

Fill out the application form here. Trials will be approved approximately once per week. The deadline to apply for a trial is January 31st, 2023.
